The 2011 Pat Napoleon Community Service Award was presented to co-recipients at City Hall at last night’s City Council meeting.

Honorees Rob Schilling (host of 1070-AM WINA’s “The Schilling Show”) and Carole Thorpe (chairwoman of the Jefferson Area Tea Party) were commended for their accurate yet unheeded warnings to City Council against their allowance of the Occupy Charlottesville encampment. With media present, Mrs. Napoleon awarded the pair with certificates of merit and hardbound printings of the U.S. Constitution.

Occupy activists were evicted from Lee Park by city police on November 30 following over 40 days of encampment. The action resulted in 18 arrests and the unnecessary subjection of Charlottesville’s Finest to despicable shouts of obscenities that police officers calmly and professionally endured in the line of duty.

From the outset of the occupation to its end, Mr. Schilling and Mrs. Thorpe exposed multiple abuses of power and unequal protection under the law by City Council and its agents which included unprecedented waivers of numerous city codes, the issuance of a verbal directive by City Manager Maurice Jones to restrain police from enforcing park curfew prior to the grant of a legal permit, and an effort by Mayor Dave Norris to unfairly burden city taxpayers with the cost of over 40 days of electrical expense incurred in Lee Park.

Both recipients expressed gratitude for their prestigious recognition.

Mr. Schilling stated, “It is my great honor to receive this award from one of Charlottesville’s finest citizens, Pat Napoleon. Pat has been fearless in confronting corrupt government officials with difficult issues that would not otherwise have been discussed. Carole Thorpe, my co-recipient, although not a city resident, has done more to benefit Charlottesville citizens in the past few months than has the present City Council during their combined elected tenures.”

“I am humbled to receive this honor from Pat Napoleon, a great lady and patriot whose opinion matters more to me than the whole of Charlottesville city government”, Mrs. Thorpe said. “The sharing of this award does not diminish the honor by half, but its value is doubled when the co-recipient is the inestimable Rob Schilling. This award validates my efforts through the Jefferson Area Tea Party to serve our community with honesty, integrity, fairness, and respect for the law – objectives that I wish were practiced by Charlottesville City Council.”

A celebratory dinner with entertainment at another location followed the presentation.

Warning: Video contains extremely vile language; not suitable for children

www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfziHvdRMag

Facing eviction from their trashed Lee Park encampment, the true character of Occupy Charlottesville (OC) was revealed during a November 30, late night police action to liberate the park.

City Manager (and Director of Public Safety), Maurice Jones, in conjunction with Charlottesville Mayor Dave Norris, ordered the group dislocated, after previously ordering police to disregard the law and allow OC to violate permit and curfew statutes.

In a November 2 press release, Occupiers promised the greater community that theirs was a peaceful movement—intent only on calling attention to the excesses of structured capitalism:

The purpose of this three-week protest is to prove to ourselves and to the world that peaceful, abundant community is possible without corporate sponsorship, huge budgets, or leaders.” [emphasis added]

OC’s aggressive actions and violent invective of November 30 belie several previous group statements regarding the nature of the local Occupy movement.

Unearthed in this shocking audio/video compilation are Occupy Charlottesville’s:

Blatant sexism—the vicious verbal assault on a female police officer

Anti-police obloquy—with obvious intent to provoke

Disrespect for the rule of law—refusing to obey lawful orders to disperse

Extremely vile language—used liberally throughout, even in the presence of young children

Verbal violence directed toward government officials—“Dave F#&%ing Norris”

The unmerited leniency and institutional political favoritism shown toward Occupy Charlottesville by naïve, immature city officials has been met with dangerously vehement hostility. This Marxist movement—born of lawlessness—predictably has degenerated into base depravity and utter chaos.

The discussion took place at the October 17 City Council meeting as elected Democrats stumbled over themselves to extend grace to the petitioning leftists. These sought official absolution for their sin against society—acknowledged and flagrant violation of city code. Szakos gleefully complied by offering recompense to the admitted malefactors:

One other question I had: Is there a porta-potty at Lee Park? Is that something that we would be willing to provide, or to find a source for?

Never mind that Charlottesville’s homeless community gets no such accommodation from city government.

Never mind that taxpayers, not “the City,” would be footing the bill for the cartable crappers.

Never mind that the Occupiers were requesting permission to violate laws that the other 99% of Charlottesville citizens are required to follow.

Fortunately, Szakos’s harebrained idea was tabled, although it was seriously considered.

There should be no reward for transgression, because reward under such conditions undoubtedly will further anarchy. But in a place like Charlottesville City Hall—where the truth has been exchanged for a lie—it appears that no idea is too outrageous for proposal, no idea is too stolid for consideration, and ultimately, perhaps, no idea is too odious for implementation.

See Kristen Szakos make her unbelievable “free” porta-potty proposal:

Hot on the heels of a declamatory shot across the bow of the Jefferson Area Tea Party (JATP), Albemarle County Supervisor, Dennis Rooker, has refused an invitation to appear on WINA’s The Schilling Show in order to clarify inappropriate remarks he delivered at a recent public assembly.

At the Wednesday, September 7 Albemarle County Board of Supervisors meeting, a board majority (Ken Boyd, Rodney Thomas, Duane Snow, Lindsay Dorrier) voted to drop the county’s participation in the Cool Counties initiative, with Dennis Rooker and board chair, Ann Mallek, voting to continue the unholy alliance. A visibly rattled Rooker took the outcome as an opportunity to again disparage the local tea party—and the tea party movement in general—as he lashed out against the verdict:

“But, you know, I mean, where we’re going now, is, in my view, is in a direction where we’re afraid to be perceived as environmentally committed because, you know, I guess, the tea party has told us that’s it’s a bad thing and they can put another notch on their gun and send out an e-mail to all of their people saying we got Albemarle County out of ICLEI, and we got Albemarle County out of Cool Counties.

There will be an e-mail that goes out nationally today or tomorrow on that issue because it’s a notch on the gun. And that’s what this is about. A notch on the gun.”

And what is the source and meaning of Rooker’s violent “gun” rhetoric? From Answers.com, “notch on the gun” is described as follows:

In westerns, the phrase is commonly used metaphorically with each notch on the gun representing one person the gunfighter owning it has killed.

When invited onto The Schilling Show to appear with JATP chair, Carole Thorpe in discussion of his disparaging remarks, the previously always-available supervisor suddenly busied himself for the next several weeks:

From: Dennis Rooker dsrooker@earthlink.net
Date: September 12, 2011 01:11:51 PM EDT
To: Rob Schilling, Carole Thorpe
Subject: Re: Cool Counties on The Schilling Show

Rob,

Thank you for your offer. Unfortunately, I would not have the time in my schedule over the next couple of weeks to be on your show.

Dennis

Rooker’s assiduous schedule miraculously opened up three days later, when he appeared as a guest on WINA’s Morning News with Rick and Jane to discuss his shifting position on supervisor-appointed “committees” for the proposed 29 Western Bypass.

Cowardice, violent rhetoric, and passive aggression aside, Dennis Rooker is in desperate need of a reality check and perhaps, anger management coursework. The supervisor’s passionate embrace of the leftist-internationalist climate change agenda has upended his usual sense of decorum, resulting in multiple incidents of verbal incontinence and discommodious public lid-flipping.

Unfortunately, the left’s ongoing high profile condemnations of incivility in public discourse are a one-way street. Locally and nationally, liberal attacks on conservatives are met with stony silence from the typically hypersensitive, self-deputized “civility police” as well as from the Marxist mainstream media. Dennis Rooker’s anti-tea-party diatribe highlights not only his own lack of self-control but also America’s pandemic progressive political hypocrisy.

A Charlottesville City Councilor seeking re-election has been ticketed for illegal parking during a recent council candidate forum.

Satyendra Huja, a long-time city employee and one-term council member parked in a clearly designated handicapped area in front of Burley Middle School during last Wednesday’s political event. An eyewitness video (see below) shows Huja’s black Mercedes C320 (license: WAHGURU) blocking a curb-cutout ramp meant to provide access to the school for disabled persons parked in adjacent marked handicapped spaces. The particular spot Huja occupied was conspicuously marked to prohibit any parking. [story continues below]

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ON8m1ceWCxU

When the forum was interrupted by a power outage, witnesses report Huja hurrying from the building to move his then-ticketed vehicle—ostensibly to prevent towing.

Although the designated handicapped area is a marked tow-away zone, a Charlottesville Police Department spokesman cited city code sections, which allow for but “do not mandate” vehicle removal under this circumstance. Huja was ticketed for violation of city code 15-133 but not towed.

In an email statement (copied in-full below), Councilor Huja says he “did not notice” the handicap signs surrounding the area in which he parked and did not knowingly occupy the forbidden space. Contradictorily, he then explains that he did not display a special City Council parking placard on his dashboard “because I don’t believe that allows me to park in handicapped space.” Pictures taken on-scene do show an unidentified photo / name card resting in the lower left-hand section of the councilor’s dashboard, but the origin and purpose of that document is unknown. While Huja has vowed not to repeat the error, his claimed ignorance of committing this infraction leaves his future prevention mechanism meretricious at best.

See Councilor Huja’s ticketed vehicle, a pictorial of the spot where he parked, and the adjacent signage:

July 23, 2011 statement of Councilor Satyendra Huja on his parking infraction:

I did park in the handicapped parking space by mistake. I was in a hurry and did not notice the handicapped sign. I did not have city council placard displayed because I don’t believe that allows me to park in handicapped space.

When someone told me I was parked in a handicapped space I moved the car during the power outage. I did receive a parking ticket which I have paid. I have never parked before in a city handicapped space and I do not plan to do so in the future. I am sorry this happened.

From Schilling Show host, Rob Schilling, an open letter to Sal Conlon and the George Putnam family on what would have been George’s 97th birthday (note: this letter was sent directly to the family on July 14, 2010):

Dear Putnam Family,

It has taken me nearly two years to write this letter as I have spent the time contemplating and coming to grips with the fact that George passed away. As today is George’s birthday (Bastille Day as he always referenced), I thought it time to complete my thoughts and forward them to you.

Growing up in Los Angeles, I knew peripherally of George when I was a child; he was on the television news in my home during the 1960s.

In the mid 1970s I began to listen to talk radio, and by the latter part of the decade, I had “discovered” Talk Back with George Putnam on KIEV.

George was “larger than life” to me. I loved his booming voice, his laugh, his courage in calling out injustice in local government and taking on politicians by name (Zev Yaroslavsky comes to mind).

Upon graduating from high school in 1979, “listening to George” became a part of my daily routine. A number of times during the next few years, my mother, knowing my admiration for George, would take me to the Arco Towers to watch Talk Back “live.” What a thrill for me!

I occasionally would call into the program to speak with George, and one day I won a gift certificate to the Smokehouse Restaurant—one of George’s long-time sponsors. On the evening we utilized our certificate, I was amazed to see George dining with friends on the other side of the restaurant. He really did eat at the Smokehouse, just like he said every day on his program. I spent the evening looking over my shoulder just hoping to catch George’s eye.

During my college years, I would schedule classes around lunchtime so that I could listen to Talk Back. Being in a rock band, my friends were bemused by my radio habits. When traveling to midday rock-and-roll “gigs”, I would have George blaring from my car radio.

In 1981, I took a job managing a men’s “big and tall” clothing store in Sierra Madre. As the store’s sole employee, I often was there by myself, and thus took the liberty to play to Talk Back over the store’s radio system during my working hours. As you can imagine, George’s opinions and guests elicited interesting responses from the store’s customers.

By the mid 1980s, I had graduated from Cal Poly Pomona, and I realized that life was about to hit full force. It was time to get a “real” job.

In great part due to my tremendous love of Talk Back, I decided to join the ranks of the self-employed and I started my own business. I did not want to miss even an hour of George’s daily program, and I figured that if I was working for myself, I could have the radio on whenever I pleased. Over the subsequent years while running my business, I turned-down several outside job offers solely because they would have interrupted my noon-to-2:00 radio-listening schedule.

I “met” so many interesting people on George’s program, and nearly 30 years later, I still distinctly remember:

Caller, “Anthony,” who began his calls: “Hey old class of ’14,’ this is Anthony, and I’ve got two subjects…” To which, George always replied, “The first, please…”

Victor Christian, the 90+ year-old car salesman. After George talked with Victor, he would often reference his own desire to do a program-topic called “life begins at 90.” I looked forward to hearing that show, but I’m not sure George ever got to it.

Rosendo Rodiguez and his seeing-eye dog, Nardo. I don’t remember how George “found” Rosendo, but I was fascinated by Rosendo and Nardo’s walk across America, and George’s chronicling of that amazing event.

Caller, “Harold,” was dubbed the “Poet Laureate” of Talk Back. A frequent caller, Harold usually was antagonistic toward George, and sometimes they would quarrel intensely over issues. As years went by, George, in his own unique way learned how to disarm Harold. When the call would come in, George let Harold have his “say,” and then George would say, “can you give us some poetry, please?” Harold was flattered by the opportunity, and the “tone” of his calls became much softer in nature as he and George were now “friends.”

Then there was, “Doc,” the documentary person. His liberal rantings annoyed George, but George always let him “talk back.”

And, “Art, from Outer Space, “ who frequently began his calls by saying, “George, dig….”

The man who “took out the bodies,” Hal “ILLEGAL” Ezell, Howard Jarvis and Paul Gann, Doris Day, Lucille Ball, Bob Barker and so many more will live on forever in my memory.

And who could forget the advertisers? No one read an ad like George did. I can still hear George pitching for Altadena Dairy, Salon Pas, Steve Dewey and so many more.

My wife and I moved from California to Virginia in 1998, and one of the most difficult issues for me was leaving George behind. I could barely stand the thought of life without Talk Back, and in that way, the move proved as heart wrenching as I’d feared.

The multi-media Internet as we know it today was still in its infancy then. But, I did find a web site that was posting some of George’s programs online. However, we were living in the country and the dial-up connection was spotty at best. I was not able to hear much.

Eventually, I had to move on with my new life in Virginia. I never forgot about George, though, as over the interim I’d often check the KRLA web site just to make sure George was still there.

As technology caught up with my desire to hear George again, I would tune in through the Internet occasionally, and I delighted in hearing Talk Back once more.

I listened to George’s 93rd birthday special and then learned that he’d been ill and away from the program. In spite of his struggles, he remained optimistic and sounded characteristically upbeat during the program that day.

A year or so later, I learned from Sandy Frazier that George had passed. I cannot describe the deep sadness that I felt. George had always been there for me, and even though I’d not heard him regularly in years, I felt the void.

It so happens that life for me has taken an unexpected turn, and I now host a talk radio program of my own here in central Virginia. The Schilling Show has been on the air since 2008, and coincidentally, my air time is from noon to 2:00 PM.

George and his Talk Back program have influenced me and my show in so many ways. I reference him often on the air, and earlier this year, on Ronald Reagan’s birth date, I played portions George’s moving tribute to the Gipper on The Schilling Show, not only for the audience to hear how George eulogized his dear friend, but for them to get to know the man who played such a formative role in my life.

The Putnam family is in my prayers as we approach the 2nd year anniversary of George’s passing. I’m grateful to have met him on a few occasions and for the tremendous education he gave me through his life’s work.

Watch the late George Putnam sing a couple of his favorite compositions, W.C. Handy’s The St. Louis Blues and The Empty Bed Blues, on the Dr. Gene Scott television show:

Supervisors Ken Boyd, Rodney Thomas, Duane Snow, and Lindsay Dorrier all favored ending the association, while Supervisor Dennis Rooker and Board Chair Ann Mallek voted to maintain the county’s relationship with ICLEI.

Socialists, Marxists, Progressives, and Democrats were present in force at the board meeting and were loud proponents of the Internationalist organization’s agenda—but common sense prevailed. With the Supervisors’ vote, Albemarle County joins a growing number of American localities withdrawing from the International Council for Local Environment.

The Jefferson Area Tea Party spearheaded the effort to disentangle Albemarle County from ICLEI. Following is a statement from Tea Party Chair, Carole Thorpe:

Fellow Patriots:

This is a GREAT day in Albemarle County! Last night, the Board of Supervisors voted 4-2 to cancel its membership in ICLEI – International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives. ICLEI’s primary goal is to promote and help implement radical U.N. Agenda 21 in local governments in America and throughout the world.

The JATP sincerely thanks Ken Boyd, Lindsay Dorrier, Duane Snow, and Rodney Thomas for seeing through the benign facade of ICLEI and demonstrating strong leadership in the face of a sizable and mocking opposition from Sustainability advocates.

Congratulations and thanks to Dr. Charles Battig who relentlessly led our fight against ICLEI since February with multiple speeches at monthly BOS meetings, countless hours of research and documentation to build our case, and for his presentation at our March 17 forum, “The Deceptive Agenda of Sustainability in Local Government”.

We also extend special thanks to Rob Schilling of WINA’s “The Schilling Show” for numerous radio hours and SchillingShow blog posts devoted to this topic; to Tom DeWeese of The American Policy Center for his presentation at our March 17 forum; to Commissioner Richard Rothschild of the Carroll County, Maryland Board of County Commissioners for his valuable advice and action; to the ad-hoc Sustainability Committee of Dr. Charles Battig, Steve Peters, Carole Thorpe, Audrey Welborn, Clara Belle Wheeler, and Charles Winkler; to John Munchmeyer (Jefferson Area Libertarians) and members of the ACRC Executive Committee for their statements of support; to EVERYONE who attended/spoke at last night’s meeting, wrote letters to the BOS, and in any other way contributed in some way towards this victory.

The vote to determine the fate of “Cool Counties” was postponed due to open questions about its link to a relationship between Albemarle County and some environmental organizations. Some sort of related report is due out in 30-45 days and the BOS decided to wait for that.

The “Livable Communities Planning Project”/HUD grant vote passed unanimously – but only after a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ was reached by which the BOS will monitor and review individual projects as they develop AND can approve or deny a portion of its $161,000.00 in-kind leverage contribution to be spent to fund it. Ken Boyd also raised concerns that the majority of people who sit on “input committees” always seem to be on the Left Side of the ideological fence. He inquired if there may be some way by which at least one JATP person could sit on such a committee to represent our organization, and TJPDC’s Stephen Williams explained there could be a way by which that could happen. Stay tuned.

In summary – while there is MUCH work to be done in our ongoing fight against the radical political agenda of Sustainability, this was a victorious night for the JATP! We succeeded in our primary goal of the last five months to get ICLEI kicked out of Albemarle County. It was unlikely that we could overcome the more recent battle over the HUD grant but an important point was made and heard. “Cool Counties” is still a work-in-progress and could still go the way of ICLEI.

Clearly, to anyone who was listening last night, there is a LOT of education to be done on the oft-repeated claim of “Free Money” from the Federal government…for the disconnect in understanding the difference between the actual United Nations and the policy that is U.N. Agenda 21…for the assertion that we “hate the government”…and the motives and agenda of the JATP (though most of that is something made up for our opposition’s convenience).

But for today, CONGRATULATIONS to everyone in the JATP! If anyone doubted my statement at the beginning of the year that we would turn our focus to and impact local government, they believe us now.

Carole Thorpe

Arriving at the Downtown Mall rally site shortly after former Charlottesville City Councilor Rob Schilling publicly invoked his name, Norris witnessed much of Schilling’s scathing 10-minute dissertation. The ruddy Mayor was lectured on corruption in local government; fraudulent, wasteful spending in Charlottesville City Hall; and racial injustices perpetrated by Charlottesville Democrats during their decades-long death-grip on power.

While “Norris the Red” retreated just prior to the parley’s conclusion, an event observer wryly noted the Mayor’s agitation over Schilling’s condemnations: “…there was ‘red smoke’ coming from Norris’ beard.”

The fiery speech, primarily composed to inflame the constitutional passions of liberty-minded, modern-day patriots unexpectedly beset a felicitous audience of one—Marxist Mayor Dave Norris—who after receiving a thorough shellacking at the hands of his political antipode, most certainly departed the venue “seeing red.”

The provoking corporate crime? A desire to advertise wireless mobile products to a broader audience.

The Moat Monster’s vicious verbal assault on nTelos Inc. was launched during the April 4, 2011 City Council meeting as the body was discussing “naming rights” for the Charlottesville Pavilion. The music venue, held jointly by Coran Capshaw and the City of Charlottesville in public-private partnership, contractually is permitted corporate naming affiliation.

Prefacing her remarks with a disclaimer that she intended to vote in favor of the Pavilion re-christening, Szakos did so, but not before lecturing her “subjects” on the inherent evils of “big business.” Kristen laid bare her disdain for free-market capitalism as she took the floor in a painfully rambling, gesticulating objection:

I don’t think that we should have our city, you know, with corporate sponsors, um, in that sort of publically visible way. But I think that this is the law that we have and so I don’t really see um, that, that I would feel comfortable denying it because I think that it’s, it’s within the letter of the law, and nTelos is, you know, granted it’s a corporation, it’s also a local corporation, it’s not uh, uh, you know, uh, you know, some, I guess there are really no pure large companies, but it’s, it’s not a particularly horrible one. [emphasis added]

Szakos shared no supporting evidence either for her anti-enterprise malediction or her inference that nTelos was a “horrible” corporation of some degree. Viewers of the churlish outburst were left with the impression that the Marxist councilor simply hates “business”—a seemingly appropriate assumption.

An astute poverty pimp, Szakos excels at community organizing with intent to promulgate class warfare. Bemoaning the plight of Charlottesville’s poor while denigrating a successful locally based business apparently does not strike the Moat Monster as incongruous. Perhaps she should consider that:

nTelos provides 1,445 full-time jobs regionally

nTelos pays/collects corporate, sales, excise, and payroll taxes all of which enrich government coffers and help finance government social programs

nTelos offers “essential” services (telephone, high-speed Internet, etc.) at reasonable cost to all income groups

nTelos excels at customer service

In short, it does not appear that nTelos is “horrible” at all, Councilor Szakos. In fact, because of your penchant for large, expensive government, you should be thanking nTelos for their presence here, not damning them.

Once termed “dumber than a box of rocks” in a local online forum, the Moat Monster again has “lived up” (or down) to public characterizations of her intellect. While Szakos took incredulous exception to the “rocks” allegory, indications are that it may be true.

If the box fits, wear it.
