Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) is again exercising authoritarian control of student expression and permissible viewpoints.
Following a failed, coordinated effort to prohibit Victoria Cobb from speaking at a Western Albemarle High School (WAHS) Turning Point USA event (TPUSA), the ACPS thought-police have a new plan to permanently shut-down conservative and Biblical worldview expression in their government schools.
The deceptive edict is being rolled-out at a March 5 “work session” instead of a regular School Board meeting in order to evade public scrutiny and specifically to prevent Erika Kirk’s scheduled April 2 appearance at WAHS.
The policy clarifies the purpose and expectations for student organizations and strengthens limits on groups that promote or endorse violence, harassment, or hatred toward identifiable groups.
Tightens definitions and consistently distinguishes “co-curricular” (curriculum-related) from “non-curricular” organizations, emphasizing that non-curricular clubs must be student-initiated and student-led, and may not be sponsored, funded, or led by staff.
Clarifies rules for monitoring non-curricular club meetings: a staff monitor must attend for supervision and compliance, while non-students (including parents and most staff) may not direct, control, or regularly attend.
Explicitly ties non-curricular organizations to federal requirements (Equal Access Act and Title IX).
Adds operational detail: principals must publish the updated activities program and provide families a description of each organization; new clubs must submit an application and constitution/charter with required elements (purpose, type, membership/fees, affiliations, sponsor/monitor).
Adds clearer parameters around communications, guest speakers, and fundraising: flyers/materials require principal approval; in-person guest speakers during the school day are limited to co-curricular groups and must be curriculum-related; all fundraising requires principal/designee approval and funds are treated as school activity funds.
