To thwart scofflaws and reckless drivers, Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) in conjunction with the Albemarle County Police Department (ACPD) rightfully have collaborated on a school bus safety campaign.
In this effort, ACPD has installed school speed-zone cameras to inhibit school-zone speeders. For their part, ACPS has equipped portions of their bus fleet with stop arm cameras, which “automatically detect and record vehicles that illegally pass a school bus while the bus’ stop arms and flashing red lights are activated.” [sic]
Imagine the surprise of assembled ACPS staff at Agnor (Hurt) Elementary, when on the first day of school a car sped through the bus loop and passed a bus with an extended stop arm and red lights flashing!
Surprise turned to shock, however, when the driver exited the car to reveal himself as none other than Albemarle County Public Schools Superintendent, Matt “Boss” Haas, EdD.
Eyewitnesses report that when Superintendent Haas was confronted about his foolhardy exhibition of hubris, he allegedly retorted, “I can be here; I’m your superintendent!”
While in the real world, Haas could face a $250 fine for his rash actions—he’ll pay a far greater price in the court of public opinion, as his temerarious transportation transgression was caught on video.
P.S.: At least he was driving a politically correct Nissan Leaf EV, which may restore some credibility with the environmental crowd…
