Albemarle County Police Department Arrests Juvenile for Threat to Albemarle High School

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA – On Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at approximately 8 pm, the Albemarle County Police Department (ACPD) was notified by Albemarle County school staff that a social media post and email was circulating that contained threats of harm to students and staff at Albemarle High School.

ACPD quickly identified a suspect and responded to their residence for further investigation. As a result of that investigation, a juvenile was arrested and charged with a violation of §18.2-60, threats of death or bodily injury to persons on school property. The juvenile is currently being held at the Blue Ridge Detention Center.

This incident was quickly reported and investigated thanks to the cooperation between ACPD and Albemarle County Public Schools. ACPD has determined there is no credible threat to Albemarle High School today, March 27, 2024, but additional police patrols will be on the Lambs Lane campus to ease concerns.

Ensuring the safety of our students and staff remains our utmost priority. We encourage the community to report any suspicious activity to the Albemarle County Police Department or Albemarle Schools administration. Remember, if you see something, say something.

Due to this incident involving a juvenile offender, no further information will be released at this time.

Subject: Social Media Threat Investigation

Dear Albemarle High School Students and Families,

I’m writing to let you know that last night, we were informed of a threat of violence directed toward the Albemarle High School community by a student.

The Albemarle County Police Department (ACPD) was immediately made aware of the threat. Upon determining the identity of the person responsible, they went to the individual’s home and conducted a thorough threat assessment. As a result of their findings, the student was detained. Further information is forthcoming from ACPD and will be made public today.

Students are reminded that making threats, regardless of credibility, is unacceptable and in violation of the Student Code of Conduct and will result in disciplinary action by the school as well as a referral to law enforcement.

We always take threats of violence of any kind very seriously. We will continue to operate on a normal schedule today. Our School Resource Officer continues to be a visible presence at the school. We will keep you updated if we receive new information.

Any students who have knowledge of this are asked to contact the school or to use the Anonymous Alerts system to report.

We appreciate the person who brought this to our attention and ask all members of our community to report any threats they may see or hear, whether they believe they are credible or not. We are also very grateful to the ACPD for their speedy and diligent work on this. Thank you for working together to make our school safe. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the office at (434) 975-9300.

Darah Bonham, Principal
